BEFORE entering on the subject of Iconography generally, it may be advisable to devote a few pages to the examination of an attribute which is of very frequent occurrence in Christian Archaeology, and which alone will often be found sufficiently expressive to enable us to determine the dignity and character of the personage invested with it.
